Schonland Street ‘swamp’ ignored for almost three years

His last call to the municipality was in July but to date nothing has been done.

Despondent factory shop steward, Anthon von Lisenborgh points gloomily to the growing swamp on his property on
Schonland Street – a swamp three years in the making and caused by a leaking underground water valve.

Phone call after phone call and plenty of reference numbers later, his requests to the authorities to attend to the leak have been largely ignored and it seems to him, he is the only person concerned with the millions of litres of water  going to waste.

He has mostly given up: “Maybe I shouldn’t worry so much, but it’s water being wasted. It’s not right.”

His last call to the municipality was in July but to date nothing has been done.

“The flooded area is about 50 by 50 metres. We’ll be catching fi sh here one day,” he quipped. The municipality responded through Head of Communications, Dr Dumisani Thabethe on Tuesday afternoon, stating it faced a challenge with a shortage of spares.

“The spares required to repair the valve are not in stock.”
