Man rescues box of puppies found on Albert Wessels Drive

"He showed so much perseverance being sent from one place to the next, and yet here he stands again, not giving up on these animals. I think he is a true hero.”

Mandla Mlotshwa’s curiosity saved a mom and her pups from a lingering and lonely death.

While driving his wife to work on Monday, a small makeshift “bed” alongside a busy Albert Wessels Drive, piqued his interest when the bundle inside began to move.

As other motorists sped by, too preoccupied to pay attention to the abandoned bundle, Mandla was mysteriously drawn to it and stopped to investigate.

He was horrified to find the box held a litter of puppies, just a few days old and the exhausted and emaciated mother. Realising the animal was starving, he ran to his vehicle and found some polony and water which he then fed to the dog.

While she wolfed down the food, Mandla jumped onto his phone and starting making calls for assistance.

His first call was to the local SPCA but they were unable to assist immediately as all their vehicles were being utilised elsewhere, they however referred him to the municipal pound.

Desperate to get the puppies and the mother to safety, he gathered up the small canine family, put them in his car and made his way to the municipal pound, from where they were later transferred to the SPCA.

For the rest of the day, Mandla could not get the animals he had rescued out of his mind. Somehow, in such a short period of time, he had developed a strange connection to them.

This compelled him to check up on the animals the following day and much to his delight the animals were being cared for and seemed healthy.

On Mandla’s arrival at the SPCA, he received what can only be described as a hero’s welcome.

Heather Gero threw her arms around the surprised man and said, “Some people do not deserve animals, but when I meet a person like Mandla here, I cannot help but love them. He showed so much perseverance being sent from one place to the next, and yet here he stands again, not giving up on these animals. I think he is a true hero.”

With this small act of kindness, Mandla Mlotshwa has given the mom and her pups a fighting chance at survival and in so doing has not only touched the hearts of those involved but has shown that even animals’ lives matter.
