Snakes are often feared and misunderstood.

This often leads to many of them being killed or harmed but this does not have to happen. With the warmer season in full swing, some locals are bound to find these slithery creatures in or around their homes or places of work.

Brown house snake is often kept as pets because they are harmless, settles and breeds well in captivity. The body of the snake is a slender brown colour with two distinctive pale streaks above the eyes.

There is a safe solution to removing snakes. A call to Inkosi Langalibalele Local Municipality (036 342 7800) is all it takes and the staff from the fire department will arrive to remove and relocate the snake.

Night adder is a species of venomous vipers found in sub-Saharan Africa. The common night adder can grow up to around 60 centimetres long, making it the longest species of the genus Causus. They are usually olive green, brown, or greyish-brown in colour with black rhombic-shaped blotches, but not all have blotches on them.

He advises that locals keep doors and windows closed at night and ensure that they maintain good housekeeping around their property.

Puff adder is a venomous viper snake species found in African savannah and grasslands. The species is probably the most common and widespread snake in the continent. When disturbed the snake will coil into a defensive S-shaped posture and hiss loudly, hence its common name “Puff adder”. This is used as a warning signal.

Stay calm, don’t try to catch or kill snakes, and rather get an experienced snake handler. Also watch where you step and always use a torch when you walk outdoors at night. Stay away from dead snakes because snakes may fake death,” added Mr Mkhize.
