How to put up a Christmas tree

If you want to give your holiday a handmade touch, try crafting some ornaments this season

Are you not sure how to go about decorating, or do you just need to understand how the elements work together?

Whether you put up the lights first or the Christmas baubles, there is no rule to follow. However, if you don’t know where to start, we have you covered.

Here are three simple ways to put up a Christmas tree:

Step 1: Lights

Tree lights come in green and white wire strands, so choose the strand colour to match your tree so the wire will be hidden.

Lighting up the tree from the inside will give it a dynamic look. Begin at the base of the tree and work your way up, wrapping lights around every major branch, moving from the base stand to tip and back.

Step 2: Christmas garland

To avoid branches bulging between tightly cinched garland strands, start at the top of the tree and slowly increase the amount of garland between each wave as you work your way down the strands.

Step 3: Christmas tree ornaments

The final step in decorating your tree is to hang your Christmas ornaments.

Hang your larger ornaments, spacing them evenly around the tree. Fill in around those ornaments with medium- and smaller-size ornaments. Be sure to hang some ornaments closer to the main branch to create depth and interest.

Finish dressing the tree by adding specialty items, such as clip-on ornaments or icicles.
