Estcourt learners taking a stand against abuse
Donning all black and armed with their posters, with strong messages such as 'Stop killing our mothers and sisters'
On the last day of 16 Days of Activism, seven young girls made their voices heard. Passionate about ‘Protecting Our Precious Women and Children’ the birth of the POPWAC campaign came about.

Donning all black and armed with their posters, with strong messages such as ‘Stop killing our mothers and sisters’, written in bold they made their way through the central business district.
The march started at the Estcourt Town Library and the young women made their way through the taxi rank. The girls aged between 16 and 20 years-old decided that December 10 was the ideal day to have their march.

It marked Human Rights Day as well as the last day of the international gender-based violence campaign against women and child abuse. The campaign runs every year from November 25, which is the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women until 10 December, Human Rights Day.
Estcourt High School learner Nomfundo Dladla started the campaign when she realised how much of violence there is.
“Not many supported us and people need to know about this,” explained Nomfundo.
