Excitement builds for Isandlwana re-enactment today

A large media contingent is present along with a group of film makers

Excitement is brewing under the brooding, sphinx-like hill of Isandlwana. The date of the 140th anniversary of the iconic battle of the Anglo Zulu War is January 22 but the re-enactment is being held today and will be watched by King Goodwill, Chief Buthelezi and a host of other VIPs.

The redcoats will include soldiers from UK re-enactment teams and the Dundee Diehards with members from Dundee and Newcastle.

Naresh Gopie, chairman of Tourism Dundee, is also there and expressed his delight that the battlefields continue to be the Dundee district’s biggest draw-card for international tourists.

Today’s event has attracted a large media contingent including a group of film makes from Durban.

The 1879 battle was Victorian Britain’s worse defeat with over 1200 men killed. Over 3000 Zulus are believed to have perished.
