The Shri Siva Subramanyar Temple Ladysmith held their 58th annual Thaipoosam Kavady festival on Monday (January 21) at Agra Grounds.
The Kavady prayer is observed over a 10-day period, during which time devotees abstain from alcohol and meat, among other things.

Devotees left the temple at around 3pm and made their way to Agra Grounds, where a Hawan ceremony and other rituals were performed.
People who were at the Kavady also received blessings at the prayer.
From the grounds, the devotees went back to the temple at around 7pm, where the prayer was concluded.
Many offered milk, water, fruit and floral tributes, while others went so far as to pierce various parts of their bodies (such as their tongues and cheeks) with hooks and small lances called ‘vel’. The aim of the body piercings is to attain full concentration on the Lord, showing their true faith and devotion.
Devotees give worship to Lord Muruga, who is the youngest son of Lord Siva and Mother Sakti, and the brother of Vinayagar (Lord Ganesha).
