Update: Children injured in crash on their way to school

Some of the children were transported to hospital for further treatment, while others were stabilised at the scene

15 primary school children sustained minor injuries on Wednesday morning (January 30) after the taxi they were in veered off the road into vacant land in Centenary Road.

It is alleged that the driver of the  taxi lost control of the vehicle.

The little ones were seen crying, some in a state of shock, as they expected to be in their classrooms and not in an ambulance.

Public Safety, police and other emergency officials were on scene to help the injured and keep an eye on traffic flow.

Some of the children were transported to hospital for further treatment, while others were stabilised at the scene.

A huge crowd of concerned community members gathered to see if they could help in any way, but mainly to ascertain if the children were fine after being attended to by paramedics.

“I’m concerned about the reckless driving of some taxi drivers in this area,” said resident Zandile Khumalo.

IFP councillor Abbas Warasally also expressed his concern, saying that, “I would appreciate it if Public Safety officers conducted regular routine checks on taxis to make sure that the vehicles are roadworthy and also see they are not overloaded.”
