R28.2 million in Vryheid traffic fines to be written off
The Auditor General feels that the recovery of traffic fines that haven't been paid in Vryheid is doubtful.
R28.2 million in unpaid traffic fines are likely to be written off. “The recovery of this debt is doubtful due to poor collection practices in AbaQulusi and a history of poor debtor payments,” said Preshnee Moonia, a representative from the Auditor General’s (AG) office who presented the audit report for AbaQulusi to council.
Furthermore, water and electricity theft has cost ratepayers R46.1 mill
Electricity losses in the 2017/2018 financial year amounted to R31.68 million, which is 22% of the total electricity purchased. This is an improvement from the previous financial year, when losses added up to R68.38million. Electricity losses are mainly a result of illegal connections.

Water losses in the 2017/2018 financial year amounted to R14.42 million, which is 48% of the total water purified. Water losses in the previous financial year amounted to R2.87 million. Water losses are a result of illegal connections, unmetered connections, burst pipes and provision of water to areas where there is no water infrastructure.
