Police divers comb river in Weenen for missing man

A man is missing after his vehicle was swept away at a low lying bridge in near Weenen

It’s been more than 24 hours since a man was reported missing.

His vehicle was allegedly swept away by high waters at a low lying bridge in the Mngwenya area of Weenen on Monday evening (February 25).

The man, whose name is known to the Estcourt News, is believed to have been carried away by the raging water.
Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Basheer Khan confirmed that a search was launched on Tuesday morning by the Ladysmith K9 Unit.

The man’s vehicle was recovered during the search.

Divers continued to wade through the river for the driver but the search was called off yesterday (Tuesday) afternoon.

“This morning officers from the Newcastle SAPS Search and Rescue Unit as well as SAPS divers from Pietermaritzburg joined the search. The search is currently continuing,” commented W/O Khan.
