Weenen family seeks clues after hit and run crash in Estcourt

A family has been left traumatised after they suffered injuries during a hit and run collision

Still reeling with shock while trying to deal with injuries and trauma, a Weenen family is seeking answers after falling victims to a hit and run collision.

Veerosha Sarjoo, who was travelling in the car with her brother (29) and sister (27), says that the family has become victims of a crime after the driver of a red bakkie crashed into them and fled the scene.

It was a Saturday afternoon (February 23) and the siblings were returning from Pietermaritzburg. As they were approaching the intersection of Rensburgdrift and Papkuilsfontein, the bakkie driver who was travelling from Rensburgdrift, allegedly at high speed, failed to stop at the Stop street and ploughed into the family’s car.

“The driver veered onto the centre lane and slammed into the front of our car. He drove away from the scene but a witness gave chase,” said Ms Sarjoo.

A passenger in the car allegedly ran off before the driver could take off. The driver allegedly sped towards the quarry where the vehicle plunged into a nearby river.

The driver allegedly steered the bakkie into a river before fleeing.

“The driver jumped off the vehicle while it was in the water and ran away,” added Ms Sarjoo.

The family was in a state of utter shock and injured.

“My sister was hurt on her face, my brother’s collar bone was fractured and I injured my rib cage and spine,” explained Ms Sarjoo.

The siblings were taken to Estcourt Hospital for medical treatment while their wrecked vehicle was towed away from the scene. The family members went to the Estcourt Police Station twice, on February 24 and 25, to report the matter.

“The police refused to open a charge; they said no one was killed. This is quite disappointing. It’s sad that all you need now is an accident report whereas in the past you could report such incidents. Now if you want to pursue it, it becomes a civil matter and victims of such crimes have additional costs, not to mention medical bills
and trauma because of someone else’s negligence,” commented Ms Sarjoo.

The police spokesperson has been asked about the procedure when reporting such a matter; however no response was received.

Meanwhile the family is keen to locate the driver and appeals to members of the community who can assist to please call Veerosha Sarjoo on 074 965 2567.
