Spider that cuts human and animal hair found in Ladysmith home

The Red Roman Spider, also known as a Sun Spider, is a strange creature that resembles a scorpion

Ladysmith resident Bianca Joubert had shivers down her spine when she suddenly saw a huge Red Roman Spider on the wardrobe in her room.

She was lying in bed and noticed the huge spider above her. She told the Ladysmith Gazette that if she hadn’t spotted it in time, it would have jumped onto her face.

The Red Roman Spider, also known as a Sun Spider, is a strange creature belonging to the Arachnida class. They also somewhat resemble scorpions. They are not poisonous.

Many people refer to this spider as a “Haarskeerder” (Hair Cutter) or “Baardskeerder” (Beard Cutter) because of its sizable jaws and the fact that it often cuts the hair of sleeping people and animals.

“With the help of my husband, we safely removed this creepy-crawly from my room to a place of safety.”
