Bergville residents protest over land claim issues
Skirmishes broke out between the police and community members
The community of Bethani in Bergville staged a protest on Friday (April 12) over land claim issues.
The protesters took to the streets and burned tyres to air their grievances.
This comes after allegations that the councillor of this community misused money that was meant to go to land claim beneficiaries. An amount of R40 million was set aside for those with valid land claims. However, the community says that none of this money reached the people.
The protest was very heated, with skirmishes breaking out between the police and community members.
A case of corruption was opened against the councillor on Friday.
