MEC ‘appalled’ during visit to Estcourt businesses

Illegal loan business is shut down, expired products removed and non-compliant business owners issued with warnings

When a government delegation swept through town last week, some business owners were grilled and others gifted.
Compliance and legality were in the spotlight as the MEC for Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs Sihle Zikalala made a stop in Estcourt and Bergville last Tuesday.

This was part of a Business Regulation and Inspection campaign that aimed at rooting out businesses operating illegally, examining premises, motivating aspiring small business owners and learning about challenges that require special intervention.

Hosted by Inkosi Langalibalele Local Municipality Mayor Jabulile Mbele and accompanied by Mayors from Okhahlamba and Alfred Duma local municipalities, the MEC visited several businesses in the central business district.

Here he was met by several violations, which left Mr Zikalala appalled, according to his office.

“Some of the violations ranged from expired foods, labour law infringements and illegally-run loan shark businesses. The MEC was appalled also at the violation of the basic conditions of employment wherein some employees are kept overnight at the shop,” read a statement from the department.

Expired food and cosmetic products were also found and the MEC removed these items, while issuing the store owners with notices and a stern warning that he would return unannounced for a follow-up visit.
Municipal Manager Patrick Mkhize said that the irregularities uncovered at some of the stores were a contravention of consumer’s rights and poses a threat to human lives.

Mr Mkhize added that the MEC’s visit was two-fold; to see the challenges first hand and implement steps to grow the economy. Before leaving Estcourt, the MEC visited Pioneer Foods in Bank Road where he observed the operations at this long-standing Estcourt industry.

A small business owner from Bergville received a gas stove.

To conclude his visit, Mr Zikalala visited the Bergville community where small business owners were given stoves and fridges to assist with growing their business.
