Elections 2019: It promises to be a fine autumn day

The IEC said it was “concerned” that the majority of those not registered are under 30 years old.

May is probably one of the most stable months (weather-wise) of the year and it promises to be a fine, warmish autumn day -Election Day.

The weatherman has predicted minimum temperatures of around 11 and 12 degrees in the Endumeni and Nquthu and Dannhauser areas.

The mercury is expected to rise to around 26 degrees throughout the district and the chances of rain are 0%.

Despite although the hype about voting, over 9 million South Africans who are eligible to vote have not registered to do so.

According to Ground Up, the proportion of South Africans eligible to vote who have registered for the 2019 national election has dropped substantially from 2014.

After the final registration weekend in 2014, 25.3 million people registered to vote out of an estimated 31.4 million eligible people. While the number of registered voters in 2019 has increased to 26.7 million, the eligible population has increased to about 35.9 million.

This puts the registration rate at 74.5% in 2019, well below the 80.5% in 2014.

In a statement released on Tuesday, the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) said it was “concerned” that the majority of those not registered are under 30 years old.
