Once again, the people’s needs were put first as uThukela District Municipality Deputy Mayor NW Mchunu and administrative team introduced the Springs Protection Project to the community of Brynbella near Estcourt last week Friday.
“The protection of natural water resources is a priority to the district. Not everyone has access to clean, treated and potable water. In the presence of such natural resources, this will go a long way. They also provide good and hygienic sanitation,” said Deputy Mayor Mchunu.

Water from springs will assist the community regarding access to clean and natural water. The springs have not run dry for many years and are hoped will sustain the community for many years to come. She also reminded the community that the idea behind the Integrated Development Plan (IDP) Budget meetings that were recently held was to give people a chance to give their input and comments in terms of their needs.

“The project we are bringing here will also create temporary job opportunities for the locals,” emphasised Cllr Mchunu.
The contractor that will be undertaking the project is Springs Protection and Appurtenant Works. The project is envisaged to create about 10 temporary jobs for the locals. It is also expected to take up to six months to complete. An amount of over R3.5 million has been allocated for the project. The community is grateful that council is developing their community, as they have suffered a lot, especially when it comes to water supply.
In other activities on the day, the uThukela District team (led by Speaker PG Strydom, and accompanied by Chief Whip S Dlungwane and Cllr Dlangalala) proceeded to the Nkosana Community Hall in Ward two of Inkosi Langalibalele Municipality to introduce another contractor.
The Speaker also introduced Sydwalt Construction, that will be dealing with three spring protection projects and 15 stand pipes that will supply water to the Emandabeni community. About seven temporary job opportunities will be created.
Cllr Dlungwane, Ward Councillor N Mpembe and the team of officials were also engaged in similar activities in Ward three, where they introduced the same service provider to do springs works. Addressing the community, Cllr Dlungwane said only one spring protection will be carried out and five stand pipes will be installed for now to supply water to the Nyezane community. He further said that only seven temporary job opportunities are expected to be created by the project.
The last round of activities was held in Ward one in the Emadolobheni area, where Cllr Strydom and Ward Cllr Mgaga introduced the contractor to the community. The contractor will undertake the spring protection works, install two 5 000 litre Jojo tanks and five stand pipes.
