Vryheid pensioner disgusted by sewage flow

I’m a pensioner. I can’t afford to pay someone to clean up my garden every time the drain overflows.

Anna Marais has lived at the corner of Mason and Heeren Streets for 49 years.
In the last few weeks, she has grown increasingly despondent at having to deal with the abhorrent stench and foul flow of sewage, which runs through her garden every time the drain on the street corner overflows.

She claims that despite several calls to AbaQulusi Municipality, requesting its assistance in cleaning up the runoff ebbing into her garden, the municipality has not been very helpful in this regard.

“They come and clean up on the streets and on the pavements, but I have to pay for someone else to come and clean up in my garden,” she says.

“I don’t think that’s fair. I’m a pensioner. I can’t afford to pay someone to clean up my garden every time the drain overflows.
If it carries on like this, I’m worried that my dogs will get sick.”
