Fire extinguishers, electricity points as well as storage were also closely examined. Department spokesperson Dumi Mzila said that their main concern was to protect the rights and safety of the community.

He added that the team had uncovered several contraventions that included the sale of illegal cosmetic products, expired food, beverage, cosmetic and sanitary items.

“Our mandate is to root out any contraventions, like the expired items and remove them from the shelves. Our aim is to protect the consumer. Some of the shop owners are selling illegal products like facial creams and it is displayed right in the front window,” said Mr Mzila.
