The month of June is commemorated as Youth Month in South Africa. It is well known that June 16 marks a special day on the South African calendar. It commemorates the day of the Soweto Uprising when about 20,000 learners met in Soweto in 1976.

It is commemorated annually in order to recognise the role played by the youth in the liberation struggle of South Africa from the apartheid regime and in memory of all the fallen heroes (the likes of Hector Peterson) who lost their lives during the protest.
The Inkosi Langalibalele Local Task Team, led by chairperson Mr VT Nkabinde, celebrated this month in Weenen under the theme: “Celebrating Youth Month”.
Sicelo Sithebe highlighted the purpose of Operation Sukuma Sakhe, alluding to the fact that the programme seeks to fight against poverty, crime, and illness. At the centre of this programme was a clear message to the youth that:
“Education is the most powerful weapon they can use to change the world, and also to fight against social ills”.
Several government departments were in attendance, as well as the Legal Aid Board. Services were rendered on site while messages of support to the community of Ward 22 were conveyed.
The youth was urged to stay away from drugs because substance abuse is known to lead to criminal activities. The Al-Imdaad Foundation donated 30 blankets to senior citizens.
