One of the main functions of the SPCA is to increase community support and widespread knowledge of animal care.

Around 1 600 animals have been rescued by the Newcastle SPCA over the past financial year.

At the society’s recent Annual General Meeting, Leighton Chetty, the newly elected chairperson explained the role of the SPCA was to prevent cruelty being perpetrated by man against any animal, and not serve as an animal shelter or a rehabilitation centre.

The Newcastle SPCA officially welcomed its new inspector, Suveshin Naidoo who has been in this position for the past eight months.

Treasurer, Heather Gero delivered the financial report and highlighted the expenses and incomes received.

“With the funds received from the Lotto Board, we were able to sterilse 133 animals.”

The Newcastle SPCA also has an agreement with the Ncandu Veterinary Clinic, where a percentage of animals referred to by the society are sterilised free of charge.

The women of the Lions Club were thanked for the renovations of the boarding kennels, which is an on-going project.
