With only five weeks until the Blood Buddy Memel Walk, Team Leaving a Legacy (LAL) has raised around R18 000 for charity.
This year marks the fifth anniversary of the team’s fundraising efforts, and Môrester Child and Youth Care Centre has been identified as the beneficiary for the 2019 campaign, which bears the official hashtag #whenfriendsbecomefamily.
Explaining this, LAL’s Susan Pitout said the team aims to give the children at the home a sense of family.
“When you sow into the lives of these children, we may not see the end result, but they will be someone someday. We should not underestimate the value of our contribution into their lives,” said Pitout.
One of the influential members of Team LAL this year is Rubeena Jadwat, who has raised more than R8 000 singlehandedly towards the total amount collected.
“As a mother, I can’t bear to see these children like this. They have no family at all and it breaks my heart,” said Jadwat.
Networker for the home and Team LAL member, Belinda Ellor said it was a struggle to provide for the children, and their needs extended further than food and toiletries.
“These children take part in sporting activities, and the subsidy cannot cover their equipment cost too. The children need the stimulation. Most are emotionally traumatised and have limited contact with people outside of the home. They barely even have enough pocket money to get by,” she explained.
Dehan Bezuidenhout, who has sponsored the team’s T-shirts for the past four years, is also part of the LAL campaign, and believes businesses should become involved.
“We need to sow into the community and give back where we can,” he said.
Bianca Steyn, who has taken part in three LAL events, said although she was saddened by not participating in the walk this year, she would continue to do her part and seek sponsorship.
“As a teacher, I have a passion for children and with this initiative we want to give the children of Môrester hope, that they can rise above their circumstances,” she said.
Join Team LAL at the Blood Buddy Memel Walk on August 9, and help improve the lives of the children of Môrester Children’s Home.
