AbaQulusi Mayor, Jerry Sibiya has resigned

"Politics isn't about the services. If you are not cruel and heartless, you will not survive..."

Jerry Sibiya has resigned from his position as Mayor, as well as that of IFP councillor for AbaQulusi Municipality, with immediate effect.

Following the Mayor’s special leave of absence and the recent suspension of Municipal Manager, Bonga Ntanzi, AbaQulusi residents may be speculative about the future of the municipality. Deputy Mayor, Mncedisi Maphisa has been standing in as Mayor in the absence of Sibiya, but it remains to be seen whether he will continue to fill in this void in municipal leadership.

“Fellow AbaQulusi citizens, we have travelled together,” wrote Sibiya. “As you have read my dedicated SMS to your inner souls in January 2019, I have been requested by my party to resign as a Councillor and as the Mayor of AbaQulusi Municipality. I’m so humbled by the support I have received from faith based, traditional leaders, AfriForum, Vryheid Neighbourhood Watch, the Chamber of Business, traditional healers, iCityZN, the community, political party whips from the IFP, DA, EFF and ANC, honourable Councillors and senior management (only those who were ready to serve).”

Sibiya said he would never forget the municipality’s middle management and staff, and the media, for the incredible support it had given him during his tenure as Mayor.

“Politics isn’t about the services,” he concluded. “If you are not cruel and heartless, you will not survive. Thanks very much to all of you, but I couldn’t stand corruption and threats to be killed continuously. May God Almighty bless you all.”
