Three arrested near Nottingham Road – firearms and hijacked vehicle recovered

The three suspects have been charged and will be appearing in court soon

Police swooped on three suspected criminals while they were travelling in the vicinity of Nottingham Road today (September 17).

This was after officers received information that a hijacked vehicle was spotted on the N3.

An intelligence driven operation was immediately launched.

“The suspects were on their way to commit crime in Ladysmith with a vehicle that was hijacked in Mariannhill two weeks ago. The Pietermaritzburg Flying Squad and K9 Unit police intercepted the vehicle with three occupants in the vicinity of Nottingham Road and a search was conducted,” explained police spokesperson Captain Nqobile Gwala.

The search yielded positive results and two firearms with 16 rounds of ammunition as well as a pair of gloves were found inside the vehicle.

“The suspects aged between 26 and 28 will be charged for possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition as well as possession of suspected stolen property. They will also be linked to the Mariannhill hijacking and will appear in the Howick Magistrate’s Court soon,” added Captain Gwala.
