SAPS condemns vigilantes dishing out ‘justice’ in KZN
"Those found breaking the law will be dealt with, irrespective of the reasons advanced," was the stern warning from the Office of the Provincial Commissioner. "We always encourage our communities to work with police in the fight against crime."

The Office of the SAPS Provincial Commissioner of KwaZulu-Natal is strongly condemning acts of vigilantism.
A media statement was issued by the office recently, following the arrest of six suspects accused of taking the law into their own hands.
“On September [28], a group of individuals were at Dannhauser when they were attacked by patrons of a nearby tavern.
“It is alleged they were attacked with pangas and knives after being accused of assaulting a woman in the area.
“Five were critically injured and taken to a local clinic where one of them passed away as a result of his injuries.
“A case of murder and assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm was opened at the Dannhauser police station,” read the statement.
It is further stated that after an immediate investigation was launched, one suspect was arrested and further detective work led to the arrest of five more suspects who had fled the scene.
They were all arrested in the Vryheid area.
A knife – believed to have been used to perpetrate the murder – was also seized and captured as evidence, with a court date set for October 1 at the Dannhauser Magistrate’s Court.
The suspects are all between 17 and 25 years old.
“Those found breaking the law will be dealt with, irrespective of the reasons advanced,” was the stern warning from the Office of the Provincial Commissioner. “We always encourage our communities to work with police in the fight against crime.”
