Shoprite stalwart to retire after 35 years of freshness
Upon retiring, Mr Singh said he would look for part-time jobs and did not intend on staying at home all day 'doing nothing'.
For the past 35 years, Roy Singh (62) has been the familiar face at Shoprite Dundee’s fruits and vegetable counter. His exemplary service record dates back to 1984, and many will be dismayed to hear of his intentions to retire next year.
“Working for Shoprite has been a blessing in disguise, as I have met so many people through my line of work.”
Mr Singh – whose main duties include checking of expiry dates, removing any produce (fruit and vegetables) deemed less than fresh and ensuring only the best reaches the display stand – was recently awarded a long-service certificate by the store. He admitted he would miss working at Shoprite; its customers, staff and management.
Asked about the challenges in his line of work, Mr Singh said it was hardest to deal with impolite customers: “I always politely approach them and try by all means to resolve whatever issue they may have at the time. If I am unable to resolve the matter, I escalate the matter to the manager.”
Upon retiring, Mr Singh said he would look for part-time jobs and did not intend on staying at home all day ‘doing nothing’.
“I haven’t planned anything special after retirement. All I do know is that I will still work, even after I have retired from Shoprite.”
