No arrest yet for murder in Lucknow Road

46-year-old Devraj Ramchand Ramsaroop took his last breath on the evening of September 21

According to police, no arrests have been made after a man’s body was found in Lucknow Road on Sunday evening, September 21.

46-year-old Devraj Ramchand Ramsaroop took his last breath that evening in Lucknow Road.

Recalling what happened, Edna Sewpersad (who lives in the area) said her husband and his friend called for her while she was busy at home. Her husband told her there was a man lying in the road and nobody was helping him. She immediately ran out to see if she could help.

She explained to the Ladysmith Gazette that Devraj was lying in the street, talking to himself. She and her husband asked him if he was okay and if he needed to go to the hospital, but they could barely hear him when he replied.

Edna then noticed blood on the back of his neck and on his cheek. Her husband and son picked up the injured man and placed him at the side of the road, as they were scared someone might run him over with their vehicle.

“Many motorists passed us and saw what was happening, but they ignored us and simply drove on,” added a heartbroken Edna.

She contacted business people, who also came to help Devraj, in addition to calling the police and various ambulance services for assistance. It is alleged that Devraj died when police reached the scene.

Ladysmith police are investigating a case of murder and are requesting anyone with information that could lead to arrests to call the toll-free 0860010111 number or Ladysmith SAPS on 0366383312.
