Stock theft scourge causes a headache

The elderly stock owner said he wished SAPS could do more to clamp down on stock theft cases.

A spate of stock thefts has left elderly Elliot Masondo from Gluckstadt in a quandary.

Masondo has lost a total of nine animals from December last year to date, and has now lost hope his animals will ever be recovered.

“In December last year they stole a bull; in the beginning of this year, they stole two heifers; in the middle of the year, they stole three calves and heifer, and now they have taken two more of which one was pregnant and was close to giving birth”, said Masondo.

The elderly stock owner said he wished SAPS could do more to clamp down on stock theft cases, because the loss of his livestock had caused him ‘a lot of damage’.

“My cattle are branded yet they have never been found. I really wish the stock theft unit can do more in fighting this scourge. I have even tried to join the community organisation that fights crime in area in hopes that someday I will be able to recover my stolen cattle. It hurts me because this is my livelihood, my cattle help me put food on the table because I am old and unemployed and so is my wife. We do not have children to rely upon on; we are dependent on the cattle for survival”.

Two of the calves were handed back to their rightful owner after being identified by branding.
