A triple murder took place in the early morning hours of December 3, in the Edlebe-Ndumakude area.
The grisly crime left a 68-year-old male, a 63-year-old female and an 11-year-old child dead.
According to police reports, a family member noticed smoke billowing out of the house and went inside to try and determine where the fire had started.
He then found three burned bodies on the bedroom floor and alerted police.
SAPS detectives and fingerprint experts examined the bodies and noticed they appeared to have been hacked with a panga.
A bloodstained panga was then found in the possession of three family members of the deceased.
SAPS Zululand Cluster Spokesperson, Captain Nkocy Gwala informed the Herald an arrest was made on December 6 and the family members were charged with murder.
The matter remains subject to further investigations by police.
In another incident, Pongola SAPS officials acted swiftly, upon receiving information regarding a vehicle allegedly transporting drugs from Mozambique across the border at Kosi Bay. Officials were dispatched along the route and noticed a vehicle travelling on the N2 freeway.
In a joint operation between Jozini and Pongola SAPS, the Hawks’ Richards Bay Serious Organised Crime Unit and the Pretoria Crime Intelligence Unit, they intercepted the vehicle and conducted a thorough search, finding 15 kilograms of what is believed to be heroin inside the spare wheel.
The Hawks issued a media statement later confirming the substance was in fact crystal methamphetamine (Tik), with an estimated street value of R2,7-million.
A 40-year-old male was arrested for possession and dealing in drugs.
A case was opened at the Pongola SAPS and transferred to the Hawks for further investigation. The suspect appeared in the Pongola Magistrate’s Court last Wednesday, and he will appear again in court on Wednesday (December 11) with legal representation. KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Khombinkosi Jula congratulated the officers for demonstrating ‘the determination of police officers to stem across border crimes during this festive season’.
