Princess Park Bridge murder sparks outrage

Residents are concerned that the Princess Park Bridge is a crime hotspot

The murder of 28-year-old Ruwayne O’reilly has sent shock waves across Estcourt, especially the community of Colita where he hailed from. On the morning of December 29, Estcourt police were summoned to Princess Park Bridge where the lad’s lifeless body was found face-down.

Security personnel working in that vicinity recovered the body and then alerted the police. Ruwayne sustained injuries to his head.

Stephenie O’reilly, Ruwayne‘s sister, remains hopeful that justice will prevail.

“Ruwayne’s death was a tragedy, not only for the family but the community at large, simply because he was not the kind of person who was violent. “We are appealing to the community, if you have any information, no matter how small you may think it is, please take it to the police station,” she said sombrely.

Ruwayne was described as a fun-loving, friendly, hardworking and bubbly person, with a zest for life.

Estcourt police are investigating a case of murder and appeal to anyone who has helpful information that can possibly lead to the arrest of the suspect/s or who may have witnessed the incident to come forward and assist.
Investigating officer, Sergeant Ntuli, can be contacted on 036-342-9520/5 or 082-346-7155.

Locals are gravely concerned about the Princess Park bridge being a ‘crime hotspot’ but it is neglected by authorities.

For years the bridge has been the scene of armed robberies, murder and even deadly accidents. The deceased was laid to rest this past Saturday.
