Local police officers win coveted awards in Durban

Uthukela Acting Cluster Commander Brigadier F Bantham led by example as first runner-up in the ‘Senior Operation Commander in KZN’ category

Seven police officers from the Uthukela Cluster were part of the Provincial Excellence Awards held at the ICC in Durban on December 18, where they were rewarded for their sterling work in the South African Police Service.

Officers from the Uthukela Cluster were nominated for awards, and Uthukela Acting Cluster Commander Brigadier F Bantham led by example. She was nominated for ‘Senior Operation Commander in KZN’ and was the first runner-up in that category.

Ladysmith Detective Service attained an award for ‘Least Number of Dockets in Column 8.6 longer than three months’. This essentially means that local detectives were successful in solving lots of cases and getting them ‘off the books’. Ladysmith Detective Service was the only station to achieve this success in the whole province, under the leadership of Colonel NMP Ndlovu.

Lieutenant Colonel Ramlagan has been in the SAPS for 26 years and won awards for the first time. She received the excellence award for second runner-up in Vispol Level 8-12. Having attended station management learning at the police training college in Paarl recently, she also received awards for being the class leader and best student with a 100% average in the course. Lt Col Ramlagan was just appointed as station commander of Bergville.

Captain Z Khumalo took two awards, one being first runner-up for ‘Women of the Year’ and the second a certificate of commendation. She, along with Brigadier Kunene, built a house for a person who was molested in the Bergville area, paying for everything out of their own pockets (with the help of Bergville Build It).

The Ladysmith recruiting team were second runners-up in their categories. They were defeated by the provincial team. The Ladysmith team was successful in meeting the deadlines and requirements that were set for 2019 recruiting. The team consisted of members: CAC Martie Marx, AC Innocent Kubheka, AC N.Maphanga, SPO SB Dlamini and N Schmidt.

Reserve Constable Mduduzi Praisegod Nyawo, who is stationed at Ezakheni police station, took the second place award for ‘Reservist of the Year’ in the whole of KwaZulu-Natal.

Mr Mazizi Katamzi won the ‘Best CPF of the Year’ award for Colenso police station.

Deputy Acting Uthukela Cluster Commander Brigadier Bantham was over the moon on seeing her Cluster doing so well at provincial level. She believes that more awards are on their way to the Uthukela Cluster in 2020.
