Amajuba District says it’s ready to host 2020 SALGA Games

"Amajuba is a suitable host, considering the rapid improvement and development of the sporting activities in the district."

The Amajuba District is excited to be hosting the 2020 South African Local Government Association (SALGA) Games.

The announcement of the 2020 host was made at last year’s closing ceremony, hosted by eThekwini Municipality in December. KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Arts, Culture, Sport and Recreation, Bongiwe Sithole-Moloi made the announcement:

“Amajuba is a suitable host, considering the rapid improvement and development of the sporting activities in the district.”

This decision was further endorsed by the District Municipality’s Council on February 5. During the meeting, Amajuba District Mayor, Dr Musa Ngubane expressed gratitude at the district being selected as the SALGA Games host:

“As Amajuba District, we are excited about the announcement of being the host of one of the biggest sporting tournaments in the province. This event will also contribute to the economic development of the town, as there will be various business opportunities made available during the course of the tournament.”

Dr Ngubane further stated that plans would begin immediately, to ensure the Amajuba District Municipality would be ready for this major sporting contest:

“More effort will be put in to ensure the sporting facilities are ready for athletes from all corners of the province. Sports federations and other interested formations will be involved, to allow them to make their contributions on how best we can host these games.”

At the meeting, Sihle Ndlovu from SALGA KZN explained the roles of a host district, what was expected of the Amajuba District and what support it would receive from the Department of Sport and Recreation, KZN SALGA and the provincial Government.
