During the past two weeks, the Estcourt News has been inundated with complaints from readers regarding overgrown grass. This can be seen in both the central business district (CBD) and residential areas.
One resident described Alfred Street as a “jungle”.

“The grass has grown so long that there is no longer a pavement for people to walk on. It looks terrible,” said an Alfred Street resident.
Just around the corner in Connor Street, overgrown grass has also invaded the sidewalk, forcing pedestrians to use the road instead.
“This lack of service delivery is unacceptable. We pay rates for zero services,” said the resident.
A homeowner in Forderville was just as livid, labelling municipal management as “useless and inefficient”.
“Someone is not doing their job and nobody cares. Surely the management drive around this town and see the state it’s in. They are useless and their inefficiency in running this town properly will not only affect us now, but will have a lasting effect for years to come,” said the homeowner.
Another homeowner in Brewitt Park remarked that long grass poses a serious safety threat.
“Criminals can conceal themselves in the bush and watch our homes. Several items, like small gardening tools, have been stolen from my yard and I suspect that the thieves use the long bush across the road to hide in,” commented the resident.
Inkosi Langalibalele Local Municipality was again asked about the verge-trimming and grass-cutting programme and when residents will see tangible service delivery. There was no response from the municipality.
