Donors bleed for a true act of love

The morning started off slowly, but by lunchtime donors were queuing to contribute to this very essential cause

‘What greater act of love can one give, but the gift of life?’
This question was answered by the many donors who celebrated Valentine’s Day by donating blood, instead of giving the traditional gifts of flowers or chocolates to loved ones.
Staff of the South African National Blood Service (SANBS) spent the ‘day of love’ assisting donors from as early at 11am at the Klipkerk.
The morning started off slowly, but by lunchtime donors were queuing to contribute to this very essential cause.
One resident commented they could ‘feel the spirit of love’ among donors as they patiently waited their turn.
Did you know?
There are less than one per cent active donors in South Africa and one unit of blood only lasts up to 42 days after donation.
This is the reason why SANBS has pleaded with everyone to become registered blood donors.
Donors can give blood as often as every eight weeks, and that one unit of blood can potentially save three lives. Blood is separated into red blood cells, plasma and platelets, which can benefit three patients.
SANBS needs to collect 3 000 units of blood daily, to ensure sufficient blood supply to all healthcare systems.
Save a life and make your way to the next blood drive!
