DHS Spartans claim third in regional hockey tournament

The Spartans had to put up quite a fight in the play-off for third and fourth place, against Ferrum.

Early Saturday morning, the DHS Spartans travelled to Vryheid to take part in the 2020 SPAR School Girls Hockey Challenge.

The girls were excited to get on the AstroTurf, to compete against various schools in the awesome pre-season tournament. With adrenaline pumping through their veins, the girls did not even feel the cold weather from a persistent drizzle which kept coming down.

The scores were as follows:

The girls drew their first match against Sarel Cilliers 2-2; they beat Vryheid Landbou 1-0; they lost against Pionier 0-1. In the semi-finals, the girls faced St Dominics and lost 0-2.

The Spartans had to put up quite a fight in its last game, which was the play-off for third and fourth against Ferrum. After a very taxing game, drawing everything from each individual player, the girls managed a final score of 0-0. These results lead to a subsequent draw with Ferrum for third position overall.

DHS would like to congratulate Aphiwe Shabangu (Apple) for her outstanding performance during the game against Pionier.

Zama Khoza runs expertly down the line during a tough game.
