Cable fault causes another blackout

The municipal manager says that while Substation 5 is still at risk, measures are being taken to secure the supply as soon as possible

Last Friday, residents in parts of Drakensview were without electricity. According to Municipal Manager Patrick Mkhize, this was due to a cable fault.

“The outage was caused by a fault on the second feeder cable to Spar Substation 5; the first feeder cable is in the process of being replaced as this cable is old and damaged with water. The work has been issued to a contractor who was commenced with the installation however there are delays due to existing services such as a main water pipe feeding Nestle; so construction has to be done cautiously,” explained Mr Mkhize.

Municipal staff were on scene on Friday in a bid to find and repair the fault and restore electricity to the affected areas, which included from Hellet Road to Roland Hellet, Bulman Circle, and all surrounding areas.

“A Specialist Cable Location company was requested to locate the cable fault as the municipal equipment is currently damaged; the specialist arrived at 1pm on site from Johannesburg. While they were on route, the municipality investigated an alternate avenue of restoring the power, which was done and completed by 7pm,” added Mr Mkhize.
