The District Command Centre (led by Mayor Siphiwe Mazibuko) and the Health Department (led by Dr T Zulu) visited Inkosi Langalibalele Municipality for a joint mass screening and testing programme last Wednesday (April 22).
The programme was conducted at Esigodlweni in Ward 18.

In her remarks, Dr Zulu advised stakeholders that there is always a possibility of encountering challenges whereby some households will chase you away from their homes. On the other hand, some will be welcoming and co-operative. She said people still have fear that they are going to be injected with something when they see field workers.
SASSA, represented by Mr Thomas, appealed to everyone that if they enter households, they must profile them but not commit to bring any food parcels, as this will create expectations. He said that all the people who need assistance must be encouraged to phone the number provided.

The mayor appreciated the commitment shown by stakeholders during the screening and testing campaign. He made a commitment to work together with the relevant departments to assess and profile needy households.

During the door-to-door screening activities, the mayor appealed to everyone to please stay at home unless it’s absolutely essential to go out, thereby reducing the spread of Covid-19.

After the first programme, the mayor turned his attention to Ward 20 in the KwaVumba area, where a static tank with standpipe has been installed. He was accompanied by the Water, Sanitation & Technical Services chairperson and an engineer.

This water project will come in handy for the community, as they have faced challenges before with regards to water provision.

There is also an elevated steel tank with 250,000lt capacity that has been completed. It will be filled with ground water from the production borehole once it has been commissioned. This project has created temporary job opportunities for locals.
