St Martins Village takes a fresh approach to fundraising
St Martins broadcasts a weekly list of fresh goodies plucked from its natural stores.
There’s nothing like the fresh crispness of homegrown lettuce, the natural sweetness of organic honey or the peppery bite of a garden radish.
St Martins Village is using the nostalgic taste of the garden to keep itself afloat.
The sale of fresh vegetables, organic products and other necessities, coupled with forward planning by the organisation’s management team, has ensured the sustainability of the home in uncertain times. However, basics like formula and nappies are in constant need.
Explaining the situation, Pastor Thomas Beneke from the Evangelical Lutheran Church said the lockdown had resulted in the four children in the home’s care being ‘stuck’ there.
“They cannot be taken in by foster families and the paperwork is not complete.”
Another complication has come with grant payments not being processed. Pastor Thomas explained that fortunately, St Martins management had devised a structure to ensure the home did not rely solely on being paid out by Government.
“Because many of the children here are abandoned, we plan for this shortfall.”
An important source of income for St Martins remains its crop of fresh vegetables, free range eggs and other grocery items, a list of which is broadcast weekly. Residents often take advantage to avoid frequenting supermarkets and malls.
Available from St Martins this week:
Swiss chard/spinach – R8 per bunch; baby spinach – R6 per bunch; rocket (arugula) – R4 per bunch; butter lettuce – R10 per head; seasonal loose leaf lettuce mix – R10 per bag; radish – R6 per bunch; rosemary – R4 per bunch; honey – R65 per 500g glass; free range/pasteurised eggs – R30 per dozen (limited stocks available); cut firewood – R40 per bag.
For details and to place orders, call or message Pastor Thomas on 081 387 9152 – orders are ready for collection at 9am the day after being placed.
