SANBS calls on blood donors to be selfless

The Covid-19 pandemic has not diminished the need for blood donations.

In a time of global uncertainty, the need for blood is unchanged.

Donor Relations Practitioner for the South African National Blood Service (SANBS), Shavani Sewpaul says people are still being injured in accidents, falling ill and undergoing treatment for cancer and other ailments.

Ahead of World Blood Donor Day on June 14, residents are being called on to be selfless.

“June as a whole is World Blood Donor Month and it’s the perfect time to donate, and create a memorable moment,” said Sewpaul.

June 15 also marks the start of the SANBS Winter Promotion, where blood donors will receive a special gift in addition to the usual screening and sanitising processes.

First-time donors are also invited to make a difference.

The Newcastle Donor Centre (at the Newcastle Mall) is open from 8am to 6pm from Monday to Friday, and from 8am until 2pm on Saturdays.

Sewpaul added SANBS in NKZN is proud of its committed donors.

“The area has managed to maintain just over 80% of its target for the past two months, despite these conditions. We are extremely grateful for the donors who came through, but also call on learners who are at home – for example – to also donate blood.”
