As of June 8, the Licensing Department has opened its doors to Vryheid citizens.
AbaQulusi Municipality confirmed that the offices have been cleaned and fumigated, with limited staff allowed to return to work.
Hand sanitizers have been put in place, the community will be required to wear masks, and their temperature will also be checked before being allowed in.
The municipality urges people whose disc or licence expired during lockdown not to rush to the offices, as they still have a three-month grace period. The Licensing Department will be focusing on the backlog accumulated when lockdown was initiated in March. This means that all those who had already applied for their learner’s or driver’s licences will be attended to first. No new applications will be issued just yet. The post office has also opened for vehicle renewals. Those whose car licences expired during lockdown can skip the long queues at the Traffic Department by renewing at the local post office.

Post office spokesperson Johan Kruger confirmed that vehicle renewal has resumed in all post office branches that offer this service. He encouraged people to remember to bring their Identity Document, and that both cash and card payments are accepted. “Motorists are advised to avoid the period between the 4th and 7th of every month, as branches are usually packed with SASSA customers. Another date to avoid is the 21st of every month. Car owners have a 21-day grace period after the expiry of their licences, and the post office found that customers flock to branches on this day to renew at the last minute,” said Kruger. If you did not receive a renewal notice, you can download the form at https://www.postoffice.co.za/Products/Domestic/vehiclelicenserenewalform and complete it in advance to save time.
