A tribute to a lady whose music changed lives

The couple developed many young and talented musicians, some of whom even pursued careers in music

One of the area’s much-loved music teachers, Dorothy Gordon, passed away on June 12 after a brave battle with cancer.

Born Dorothy May Roberts in London at the outbreak of the Second World War in 1939, she studied at the Royal College of Music, where she met her husband, Leslie.

They were married in Westminster in 1957 before moving to Cape Town, where Dorothy took up employment with the Department of Education, teaching music to students.
On retirement, Leslie and Dorothy Gordon moved to Dundee to be with their son, Douglas.

The Gordons continued with private music lessons, entering many of their pupils for examination with the Royal College of Music. In this way, they developed many young and talented musicians, some of whom even pursued careers in music.

Leslie passed away two years ago. Both he and Dorothy made a huge impact on the lives of countless young people by nurturing their musical talent with rare dedication and passion.

They are survived by two sons, three grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Leslie and Dorothy are both greatly missed, and will be happily remembered for their passion in music.
