Masks in their thousands distributed throughout uThukela District
Over 4000 masks were distributed at provincial hospitals and almost 3000 at surrounding clinics

In early April, as the country went into lockdown, the Islamic Medical Association of South Africa (IMASA) embarked on a national mask campaign under the theme “My mask protects you and your mask protects me”.
This project was initiated even before President Cyril Ramaphosa announced that mask-wearing would be compulsory. The Ladysmith branch of the IMASA played an integral role in mask production and distribution locally, with the assistance of volunteers who sewed masks, as well as contributions by its members.
In total, more than 22,000 masks were distributed in uThukela and surrounding districts. Over 4000 masks were distributed at provincial hospitals (Ladysmith, Estcourt, Emmaus and Dundee) and almost 3000 masks at the surrounding clinics.

In partnership with local community organisations like SANZAF, Al Hifaazat Women’s Group, Al-Imdaad Foundation and Ladysmith Women’s Forum, 8000 masks were distributed as part of a food hamper campaign. In addition, almost 2000 masks were donated to the local SAPS, Home Affairs and municipal workers.
Various other social welfare organisations were also the recipients of masks, as were some local schools. Masks were also distributed in far-off places like Vryheid, Warden and Carolina in Mpumalanga.
The IMASA would like to thank all those who sewed masks, as well as the community members who contributed financially and helped with the distribution for a successful project.
