DUNDEE: Umzinyathi takes on the Covid-19 battle

Health workers are in the firing line of the virus

Nine doctors and 238 nurses have been infected with the Covid-19 virus in the Umzinyathi District.

So said PC Mbatha, acting director of the Umzinyathi Health Department, who was speaking at the launch of the District Development Model (DDM) at Battlefields Country Lodge last Thursday.

While she said the statistics change daily, her latest information was that there were 765 cases in Endumeni, 456 in Msinga, and 476 in Umvoti (Greytown).

At the time of her speech, there were 2408 cases, with 48 deaths and 1595 recoveries. “There could be a lag in the stats, as we do not always receive figures from doctors in private practice,” she said.

Dundee Hospital has 22 adult beds available in its Covid isolation ward and eight beds suitable for children. There are also isolation beds available at the Melusi Community Centre, Mrs Mbatha added. There are 33 tracing teams in Umzinyathi, with 641 746 people in the district having been screened.
