NEWCASTLE KZN: Armed robbers nabbed after shootout

During a shootout between the gang and the operational team, one of the suspects was wounded.

Local crimefighters helped bring down a gang of suspected armed robbers, who are believed to be behind an incident in Hlobane (between Vryheid and Louwsburg) earlier this month.

According to sources, a member of SAPS Hlobane was also robbed of her official firearm by the same group.

After receiving information, an operational team was assembled. This team included the Vryheid Task Team, Vryheid Crime Intelligence, the Hlobane Detective Unit, Ulundi Public Order Policing (POP), the Madadeni Rapid Response Team, the Gauteng Tracking Team, the Anti-Hijacking Unit and the Newcastle Crime Fighter Task Team, headed by Imran Ghafoor.

When the team eventually cornered the armed robbers last week, the desperate suspects opened fire on them. One suspect was injured and six others were arrested, while no members of the operational team were injured.

A state firearm has been recovered and the crime scene has also been processed.

“Thanks to all dedicated members, who went out of their way to make the arrests possible,” commented Ghafoor.

A second operation in Madadeni on December 8, involving the Vryheid Trio Crime Unit, the Zululand Cluster Stock Theft Task Team, the Madadeni Rapid Response Team, Hlobane detectives and the Newcastle Crime Fighter Task Team, resulted in the arrest of two more suspects.

The firearm stolen from the SAPS Hlobane member has also been recovered.

The official’s firearm is recovered by the team.

The suspects have been detained at the Madadeni Police Station and all members of the team are congratulated on their exemplary work.
