VRYHEID KZN: Employees upset to due to non-payment of salaries

"I end up going to loan sharks because life needs to continue. Right now, kids are going back to school and I do not have any money in my pockets. I had to go back to the loan sharks and ask for money again, and the interest keeps on increasing, so I don't know whether I will be able to pay it back," he laments.

Employees of a local security company called ‘Qomkufa’ are upset due to alleged non-payment of their salaries.

Speaking to the Vryheid Herald on condition of anonymity, one of the employees said he is struggling to understand how exactly they get their pay. “I have been working for this company for almost four years and the last time I recall getting my payment on time is two years ago.” He continued that there was never a time when he did not pitch up for work ”I am always on duty when I am required to be. I do my work accordingly, but when it is time for my reward, my salary is either short or I just don’t get it at all.”

He says he is not even sure of the day he is supposed to get paid, because it used to be the 25th of every month, but now that has changed and he receives his salary any old time. “We are scared to speak about it because we might lose our jobs. All the other workers are also concerned about their salaries. What concerns us the most is not being paid in full. We wonder where our money goes, because we know for a fact that we don’t have UIF and we don’t even get payslips. At least they should alert us that they are not going to be giving us our full salaries.”

“If I remember correctly, twice I received my salary short and no explanation was given. I really need this money, as it makes life difficult if you wake up and work for nothing. You cannot contribute at home, yet you go to work every day, so you end up looking like a failure,” he continued. “I end up going to loan sharks because life needs to continue. Right now, kids are going back to school and I do not have any money in my pockets. I had to go back to the loan sharks and ask for money again, and the interest keeps on increasing, so I don’t know whether I will be able to pay it back,” he laments.

The Vryheid Herald contacted Sipho Ngcobo, head of Qomkufa Security, and he commented that, “As the Qomkufa company, we have been faced with many challenges and we are aware of the situation with our employees. We are working on the issue of payment and by the end of this week, everything will be sorted out regarding their payments.”
