VRYHEID KZN: Calculators donated to learners as a way of giving
I don't give back to the community because I have more; I give back because I know how it is to have nothing and be expected to perform well in class

Kefu Manqele, a former student at Ngali High School in the area of eMvunyane (Ward 14), donated calculators to the Grade 12 learners last week Saturday.
The 50 calculators were mainly donated to the students who take Mathematics and Physical Science. Kefu has been carrying out school-related donations for almost six years as his way of giving back to his community. He has donated at Qondisani and Jojosini primary schools, and Ngali High School is his latest beneficiary.
Kefu said that “education is a societal matter. I don’t give back to the community because I have more; I give back because I know how it is to have nothing and be expected to perform well in class. I believe that when there are competent and capable people in society, then a community can thrive. One of the challenges we face in rural areas is that we don’t have proper career guidelines for young people after Grade 12, so we would like to be assisted in that specific area.”
The principal of the school, Mr Ndlovu, said, “As the school, we would like to thank Mr Manqele for his generosity in donating to our school. He is a person who loves teaching and learning; he wants to see our learners achieving good grades when it comes to Mathematics and it is impossible to pass Mathematics without a calculator. We know there are students who come from poor backgrounds who cannot afford to buy a calculator, so we would like him to continue giving not only to us, but to other neighbouring schools as well.”
Kefu mentioned that he worked with the school principal and his team in this project, and he now challenges and urges anyone else to assist learners in whatever way they can. “Adopt one learner or one school and donate,” is his challenge.
