NEWCASTLE KZN: Three suspects arrested for violent crimes in CBD

The victim who was shot was later pronounced dead at the scene.

On Sunday, April 11, a local security company and the Newcastle SAPS successfully captured and arrested three offenders for multiple violent crimes.

According to Mornè Potgieter, his armed response team received reports of a stabbing at a gas station on Allen Street.

He said when the armed response teams arrived, they arrested two suspects and handed them over to police for further investigation.

Lizzy Arumugam of the Newcastle SAPS Corporate Communications office confirmed that Newcastle Detectives were investigating a case of assault GBH which happened about 12.50am on April 11.

“The suspect is said to have been with the victim when the victim attempted to rob the suspect of his money. As a result, the two began to fight. The perpetrator then took the victim’s knife and stabbed him in the left arm,” said Arumugam.

Paramedics treated the victim then transported him to Madadeni Provincial Hospital.

The suspect (42) has appeared in Newcastle Magistrate’s Court.

The night’s activities, however, did not stop there.

It was announced shortly after the stabbing that a shooting had occurred around the corner from the first incident.

“Our response teams, in collaboration with SAPS, rushed to the next location and arrested the suspect.”

The perpetrator was found with narcotics and a firearm, according to Potgieter.

He confirmed the victim who was shot was unfortunately later pronounced dead at the scene.

Arumugam confirmed a murder case was under investigation.

“The incident occurred on Harding Street shortly before 1am. The perpetrator reportedly approached the victim at an abandoned church and an argument began.”

She went on to say the perpetrator then pulled out a gun and shot the victim, who died at the scene.

“He also shot the victim’s mother, but she escaped,” Arumugam said.

After being discovered in possession of an unlicensed weapon and narcotics, the suspect was caught and detained.

The suspect (49) has since appeared in Newcastle Magistrate’s Court.

Potgieter thanked all who helped make the arrests possible.
