NEWCASTLE KZN: Dam levels continue to decline as winter progresses
The Department of Water and Sanitation is encouraging consumers to 'change their relationship' with water.
KwaZulu-Natal’s dam storage capacity has decreased from last week’s 73% to 72.6% this week, according to the Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS).
Spokesperson, Sputnik Ratau confirmed that most dams in the province are experiencing a ‘downward trend’, including Midmar Dam, Nagle Dam and Albert-Falls Dam.
Here are this week’s dam levels:
- Midmar Dam – 98.9%
- Nagle Dam – 88.6%
- Albert-Falls Dam – 54.8%
- Inanda Dam – 97.4%
- Hazelmere Dam – 50.3%
- Driel Barrage Dam – 88.4%
- Woodstock Dam – 95.7%
- Spring Grove Dam – 98.2%
- Bivane Dam – 94.1%
- Hluhluwe Dam – 95.8%
- Ntshingwayo (Chelmsford) Dam – 78.5%
- Zaaihoek Dam – 78.4%
- Wagendrift Dam – 100.3%
- Mearns Dam – 80.7%
- Goedertrouw Dam – 74.5%.
“There are some dams which remain above average amid the decline in others. This includes Spioenkop and Craigie Burn Dams which are unchanged at last week’s 100.1% and 100.6% respectively,” added Ratau.
He said the minimal declines in dam levels should not alarm residents, but also called for prudent water use.
“You will note that our data shows a minimal decline in some dam levels, with most recording above average percentages. However, this does not mean we should be reckless with how we use water,” cautioned Ratau.
He concluded by saying that using water with the utmost care should be part of everyone’s lifestyle.
“We should really do our best to change our relationship with this precious resource. Report water leaks and infrastructure vandalism!”
