NEWCASTLE KZN: What you can do to reduce destructive fires

The Newcastle Fire Service can be reached on 034 312 1222 or contact Working on Fire KZN on 087 352 4816.

The drier winter months result in the phenomenon generally known as ‘fire season’.

With vegetation drying out and prevailing winds picking up, the Newcastle Fire Service and Working on Fire have firefighting teams on high alert. However, residents are also called on to do their part.

The Fire Service has issued the following tips:
  • Always remember that all fires start small
  • Fires need oxygen, ignition (something to light it), and fuel (something which can burn) – removing any of these three elements will kill a fire
  • Avoid unnecessary open flames
  • Keep property free of overgrowth and dry vegetation
  • If you own a farm, make firebreaks around the property but first check the Fire Danger Index with the local Fire Protection Association and/or Fire Service
  • Avoid accumulating combustible items in an unprotected area
  • Do not take a chance with open fires on a windy day
  • Keep matches and any fuel sources away from children
  • After a braai, make sure the fire is completely extinguished
  • Report all fires you can see, regardless of their size
  • Switch off the heater and stove when you leave the house or when you go to bed
  • Do not place heaters too close to bed linen, curtains or any other combustible material
  • Do not overload electrical plug sockets as they may spark or burn
  • Do not leave children alone in the house with a heater or stove on
  • In general, stay away from bad habits which can cause harm to life, property or the environment

The Newcastle Fire Service can be reached on 034 312 1222 or contact Working on Fire’s KZN office on 087 352 4816.
