NEWCASTLE KZN: Lockdown restrictions put independent musicians on mute
Fitchat explained that many of his performances were postponed or even cancelled, which made things extremely difficult.
The third wave of Covid-19 in South Africa, brought many industries to a halt. Among those affected are independent musicians, who are said to be struggling to make ends meet.
The Newcastle Advertiser recently spoke with local musician, Anton Fitchat about his experiences as an independent artist during this difficult time.
Asked how Level 4 restrictions had affected him and his ability to earn a living, Fitchat responded that many performances were postponed or even cancelled, which made things extremely difficult.
“I have a few shows that have been pushed back to later in the year… You can lose a lot of money if you are fully booked and do not receive any income from the planned gigs.”
Addressing the emotional, physical and mental impact of restrictions on his secondary livelihood, Fitchat said it was difficult for a ‘people person’ like himself to do without social interaction and entertaining others. However, he also said that anything could be fixed with help from God.
Fortunately for Fitchat, he is employed for the past five years and music is more of a hobby he indulges in when there is free time to make additional income.
To his fellow musicians, he urged them to keep strong as they would eventually get through the difficult times.
“My heart breaks for all the artists and individuals in the entertainment sector, since we don’t know how long this will go on, but we must remain optimistic,” he concluded.
