NEWCASTLE KZN: Threat of shutdown prompts mayoral call for calm
'...Any acts undermining the local economy would have irreversible consequences and may lead to more job losses.'
Newcastle Mayor, Dr Ntuthuko Mahlaba has given assurances that law enforcement is on high alert amid rumours of a ‘national shutdown’ today (August 23).
In a recent press statement, the mayor called on residents to distance themselves from any attempts to ‘destabilise businesses or incite civil unrest’ and also called for calm from the community.
He believes that any acts undermining the local economy would have irreversible consequences and may lead to more job losses.
“Newcastle’s textile industry and the township economy have begun showing signs of recovery following the July civil unrest. Last week, we witnessed the Boxer Mall opening its doors for employees to immediately start working again. We witnessed jobs and livelihoods being saved. We also witnessed dedicated men and women uniting and taking part in the clean-up of businesses campaign. We don’t want to find ourselves in a similar predicament again. Attempts of destruction of businesses and job loss must be discouraged.”
Dr Mahlaba commented he is pleased with the preparation and planning of law enforcement agencies, particularly a strategic patrol plan from the South African National Defence Force (SANDF). He stated that any criminal elements would be dealt with swiftly and decisively.
Municipal Protection Services staff are also on high alert and will work alongside all SAPS and SANDF units deployed in Newcastle.
The mayor has appealed to the community to help discourage any attempts at anarchy and has pleaded for residents and businesses to work together in their respective areas.
“Whilst peaceful protests are allowed in our democratic dispensation, such protests should be conducted in a responsible and orderly manner. I call upon Newcastle residents to once again display unity, peace and let us continue to grow our local economy.”
